ADVERTORIAL PERSON-CENTRED DEMENTIA PROGRAMS Montessori Methods for Dementia, Gente Persuasive Approaches, PLECES, The Buttertly Method, U-First, Dementiabilit... are just some of the different approaches being used today in Dementia recreational programming. So, how do you know which one works best, or which one to choose? Especialy when there are so many programs to choose from, and seemingly every one of them claims to be the "best and "most proven method in achieving person-centred engagement. The truth is that all of these programs are excellent, and to some degree are also similar in context and in delivery method. From the customized activities to the physical environment, these programs either on their own, or combined, can help you achieve the outcomes you're looking for with a loved one suftering trom dementia. So, what do they all have in common? They're all person centred programs that provide a multitude of activities for both the familes and their loved ones with dementia However, how do you know which program, or which individual activity will work best for your loved one? Well, it's often a matter of trial and error, and can depend on the type of dementia, as well as how advanced they are. t's true that there are many causes and types of dementia, and they each have their own signature symptoms, from Allzheimer's disease to vascular dementia. However, the one thing that can benefit all types of dementia are specialized person-centred programs, or activities that you create for them on your own, because nobody knows your loved one better than you. Any type of leisure activity, trom bingo to a simple conversation, to going for a walk, can benefit the person with dementia and their caregiver Invoving them in simple activities around the house, such as folding towels, drying cutlery or shelling peas can keep them well engaged. Creating an activity unique to their interests and skills such as, sorting different items, drawing or painting, gardening, juicing and baking, are also great mental and physical exercises. The list can go on and on, and the activities are only limited to your creativity and imagination. It's important to mention, however, that the activity is about the process and not the outcome. Don't wory if your loved one is doing an activity incorectly f they're engaged in what they're doing, then they're doing it right. Research shows that the use of these person-centred activities provides many positive effects on tamilies and their loved ones, including decreased depression, improved self-esteem, improved sleep habits, increased mertal and social stimulation, minimized behavioural changes and reduced caregiver stress. At One Kenton Place, we don't prefer any specific program, but rather focus on what our residents needs, interests, skils and abilities are, then create customized programs and activities for them We beleve that all of the programs offered have elements that can benefit our residents, despite the type of dementia they have, or how advanced they are.
