ADVERTORIAL SUCCESSFUL AGING "Aging is not lost youth, but a new stage of opportunity and strength. -Betty Friedan (1921-2006) I was recently talking with a friend whose 85-year-old father, while vacationing with his wife out of the country, had suffered a sudden health emergency, which necessitated ife-saving surgery followed by several weeks in the hospital. While in the hospital he was diagnosed with delirium and couldn't travel unbl the delirium was treated. As the day of his discharge approached, the family was frantically trying to figure out a "plan. They had to make arrangements for their father to be flown back home and then transferred to a tacility to continue his recovery; they also had to make provisions for their elderly mother so that she could be both cared for and close to her husband at the facility. Needless to say, it was a stressful time for everyone in the family. Successful aging extends beyond physical health. While studies show that as we age, most people will remain healthy and function at high levels, there are 1.1 million Canadians who suffer directly or indirectly from Dementia. No one looks forward to an unexpected personal or medical situation that catches you off-guard; which can be costly, time-consuming, complex, and overwhelming. One thing we can all be sure of is that we are aging, and with aging comes challenges. Not all problems occur as a crisis, but evolve in a series of warning signs spanning weeks, months, or even years. While most seniors are healthy and function at a high level, it is inevitable that as we age, issues will surface related to our independence, and planning now for that later inevitability will make the crisis much easier for everyone to navigate through. At One Kenton Place we often meet with families and their loved ones who are planning for the inevitable. We help them navigate our system, as well as offer support in the way of advice and resources. We guide them through the paperwork and arange an in-person assessment, so when the time that a move into our home becomes necessary, all the planning and due diligence has been done in advance, and the family can focus on dealing with the situation at hand rather than become entangled in a crisis Don't wait for a crisis to occur, plan now for your peace of mind later KENTON PLACE For excellent care, the one onekentonplace.ca 647-932-7913 RUTH DAYAN EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Ruth Dayan has almost two decades of experience working in the healthcare industry, with a special focus in Altheimer's and Dementia care Her experience spans across all sectors of healthcare, including the management and day-to-day operations of two lange Long Term Care homes.
