Lighting the future of innovation: Testamentary gift establishes the Tom and Mary Beck Center for Advanced and Intelligent Materials supporters of the Institute. They helped establish Weizmann Canada and the campus' Solar Tower, which led to worldwide developments in solar energy research. The science undertaken at the Tom and Mary Beck Center for Advanced and Intelligent Materials will have applications in space, aeronautics, environmental sustainability, and medicine. Newly identified materials could expand our computational capacities, or, as energy sources, reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. The future is open, although we do know the Center will put Weizmann scientists at the forefront of an international field. Tom and Mary Beck, lifelong supporters of curiosity-led scientific research, have left a visionary gift to the Weizmann Institute of Science as part of their legacy, to establish a center for the research and development of new and advanced materials that will change the fabric and function of our world. After arriving in Canada in 1950, Tom and Mary turned a small electrical company into NOMA Industries Limited, one of North America's largest electrical manufacturers. After a visit to Israel and the Weizmann Institute of Science in the early 1960s, Tom and Mary became enthusiastic and devoted Cathy, Liddy and Anthony Beck at their parents home in Toronto. We are deeply grateful to Tom and Mary for their leadership, vision and magnanimous support of science for the benefit of humanity and look forward to continuing their legacy, bringing their vision of a sustainable future to reality.
