Through the support of partnerships, LiveOn.ca was created in 2008 to help increase registered organ & tissue donors in Canada. Simply put, not enough Canadians have made plans to donate. In fact, our organ donation rates are lower than many other countries, including the US.
In the past 10 years, the number of deceased organ donors has gone up by 44%. However, the number of people needing a transplant has gone up as well. As our population ages, the need for organ and tissue donations will increase.
Currently around 4500 Canadians need organ transplants. In 2014, 278 people died waiting for a transplant, one third of them needed a kidney.
